Maria Fiter graduated in Art History in Kraków, Poland, and established her studio in Barcelona in 2013. Her work bridges the worlds of art and design, with a deep passion for sculpture evident in the organic shapes of every lamp. Each new design begins as a vision of rough yet elegant forms, always inspired by the natural world.
“I love working with papier-mâché to create lamps and objects because, to me, they are like functional sculptures that transform our surroundings. Where we live and what we are surrounded by profoundly affects our mood and well-being. My creations can be personalized—shapes, textures, and colors can be adjusted to harmonize with any interior, creating a cohesive whole. Having studied art history, I am fascinated by sculpture and its influence on the spaces it inhabits."
Maria’s commitment to ecology is integral to her working process—she repurposes newspapers from a nearby library in Sagrada Familia. The production is eco-friendly, producing minimal waste (mainly gray water), and she uses water-based cellulose glue, earth pigments, and acrylic paints, all free of toxic substances.
“There is a certain poetry in paper, in the transformation of pulp. My lamps are not merely paper creations—they are crafted from newspapers that capture moments, snapshots in time. Each lamp holds within it messages of wars, pandemics, elections—fragments of our collective memory. In the process of becoming pulp, these messages mix and fade, transforming into something new and fresh.”
Inspired by the form of the human body—its curves, fractures, and delicate nature—Maria’s creations are abstract interpretations of these elements. Her works are never literal; they are transmuted through her imagination and solidified in an abstract form. Nature and art are her muses, especially the textured techniques of pintura matéríca , where texture itself becomes a narrative.
