Before the lamp exists, it lives as an idea before coming to life on paper. A form is sketched and reworked until perfected. From there the object is hand molded into a miniature draft to see it as an object in space.
Newspapers are sourced from a local library near Sagrada Familia before being broken down and blended with water, creating a fluffy cellulose fiber pulp. Mixed with a water-based cellulose adhesive, the combination becomes the material from which every piece is made, transforming waste into something new.
Each form is created through a mold that is hand shaped from clay, then cast in plaster. The mold is filled with the cellulose fiber pulp and left to set, taking on the details of the original shape.
Each piece is slowly air-dried before being released from its mold. From here they’re sanded and refined, while the aim is not for a flawless piece but an honest one, unmistakably made by hand.
Colors come from earth pigments and acrylic paints, all free of toxic substances, painted onto the surfaces by hand. Each is applied individually, making tone vary subtly from piece to piece, allowing the color to read as material rather than coating.
"I love working with cellulose fiber to create lamps and objects because, to me, they function as sculptural forms that transform the spaces they inhabit. Having studied art history, I am deeply interested in sculpture and its relationship to space."
Maria’s commitment to ecology is integral to her practice. She repurposes newspapers sourced from a local library, working only with water-based cellulose adhesives, earth pigments, and acrylic paints, all free from toxic substances, ensuring her process is environmentally conscious and produces minimal waste.
Because each piece is created entirely by hand, no two are alike. A slight variation in the surface or a subtle difference in tone is not a flaw, but the signature of a one-of-a-kind lamp.
